24 Islands/24 hours

24 islands in 24 hours logo

24 islands/24 hours was a unique series of events celebrating reading, writing and libraries in a 24 hour race against the clock.

From 3pm Thursday 11 to 3pm Friday 12 September 2014 Libraries, friends and partners in Orkney and Shetland organised events on over 24 islands, starting in Papa Westray and culminating in Unst. We had events in libraries, schools, cafes, community halls, a castle, a boat, a yurt and a host of other venues. Author Debi Gliori did a webcast for all our primary schools and libraries around the UK joined in by holding their own Shetland Murder Mystery events. The aim was to promote all that libraries do and what they mean to communities, both here and round the UK.

MURDER at the Ravenswick Hotel

“My first thought was that there was a lot of blood on the very expensive rug where she was lying...”

As part of 24/24, Ann Cleeves made her scripts for ‘Murder at the Ravenswick Hotel’ available to Libraries wishing to host their own Shetland murder mystery event. The aim was to encourage more people to visit and join libraries. We emailed event packs to libraries so they could host the mystery on 11/12 September or in the coming months.

37 libraries got packs from us and more were distributed through the Reading Agency. We heard back from libraries around the UK who really enjoyed staging their own events
